Skipper Alex Thomson aboard the HUGO BOSS yacht

The biggest challenge

On November 6, 2016, British skipper Alex Thomson embarked aboard the new HUGO BOSS yacht upon one of the toughest sporting challenges in the world, the Vendée Globe. The solo, non-stop unassisted race around the world begins and ends in Les Sables d’Olonne, France, and is often termed the "Everest of Sailing." Since the race's inception in 1989, only 71 of 166 entrants have successfully completed the round-the-world course.

In 2013 Alex Thomson finished the Vendée Globe in third place. In 2017 he improved on that performance, reaching the finish line second on January 20, 2017 in a time of 74 days, 19 hours and 35 minutes.

"The result is not just for me; it's for my sponsor, for HUGO BOSS, for my family and friends who have supported me, and for my entire team who have worked tirelessly both before and throughout the race," Thomson said.

If Alex can maintain his momentum and claim the next Vendée Globe in 2020, he will become the first British yachtsman ever to win this legendary competition.

In the meantime, he will be taking part in the 2018 Route du Rhum, a single-handed, transatlantic event from France to Guadeloupe, and demonstrating his prowess in endurance sailing from January 2019 with a further circumnavigation of the globe in the Barcelona World Race.

The partnership

Perfection, success and elegance: these are values HUGO BOSS shares with the sport of sailing. The partnership between the Group and the Alex Thomson team began in 2003 with the legendary Rolex Fastnet Race along the English coastline. In 2004 HUGO BOSS became the official lead sponsor of the racing team, marking an important milestone in their association. The IMOCA 60 yacht has been sailing under the BOSS logo ever since. In addition, HUGO BOSS outfits Alex Thomson and his team with high-performance clothing for every conceivable type of weather, and wardrobes them with high-fashion apparel for all of their formal events and functions.

To this day, the sponsorship of Alex Thomson numbers among the most successful and long-standing of its kind in sailing.

The new ‘HUGO BOSS’ Yacht

Combining innovation, craftsmanship and engineering, the new yacht fuses modern design and performance. Launched in 2015 after two years in the making the boat is 5 percent lighter than the team’s previous racing yachts. World-renowned industrial designer Konstantin Grcic designed the boat’s unique aesthetic, which is the first entirely black sailing yacht in the world.

The stunt trilogy

Alex Thomson and his team have challenged the frontiers of the sport time and again. In the process, he has broken several world records. His "Keel Walk" (2012), "Mast Walk" (2014) and “Sky Walk” (2016) stunts have already thrilled more than 11 million fans on social networks around the globe.
