Li Ming wins HUGO BOSS ASIA ART Award 2017

Metzingen/Shanghai, November 23, 2017. Jerome Bachasson, Executive Director HUGO BOSS Greater China, and Larys Frogier, Director of the Rockbund Art Museum (RAM), announced today that Li Ming has been selected as the recipient of the 2017 HUGO BOSS ASIA ART Award for Emerging Asian Artists. Li Ming (China) was chosen from a shortlist of four artists that also included Tao Hui (China), Yu Ji (China) and Robert Zhao Renhui (Singapore). Their works are on display in a group exhibition at the RAM from October 23 through February 11, 2018.

“We sincerely congratulate Li Ming for winning the HUGO BOSS ASIA ART Award 2017. It is wonderful to see how the project is providing a platform for young artists and their work,” commented Dr. Hjördis Kettenbach, Head of Cultural Affairs at HUGO BOSS. “We also wish to thank the jury and the Rockbund Art Museum for their commitment to this project.”

“With the precious contribution of the HUGO BOSS ASIA ART 2017 nominators and jury members, we are extremely proud to present the award to Li Ming from Hangzhou, China. His oeuvre constitutes one of the most meaningful and advanced contemporary visual creations that brilliantly combine media such as performance, video and sound," Larys Frogier explained.

Born in 1986 in Yuanjiang, China, Li Ming lives and works in Hangzhou, China. In his practice, videos and video installations play a significant role. Ming’s works usually start with an image, word, movement or atmosphere that arouses his interest and ends up in embodying his personal character of sensitivity, subtlety, intuition and humor. His interest shifts from the interaction between the camera and the viewer's consciousness to an exploration of the social contexts –- such as spaces, edges and exits – which power his artistic vision.

The biannual HUGO BOSS ASIA ART Award aims to honor emerging contemporary artists from the region who are at the early stages of their artistic creation and exhibition practices. It is conceived and curated by the Rockbund Art Museum and carries a stipend of ¥300,000. Initiated in 2013, the accolade has been awarded for the third time this year. The winner of each edition is selected from a shortlist by an appointed jury, including museum directors, critics and curators.
